72 Would You Rather Questions Written for Adults, Not Teenagers

These would you rather questions for adults skip the desert-island fantasies and go straight for the things that actually keep people up at night: tax returns, difficult colleagues, noisy neighbours and the slow creep of turning into your parents. One question, two genuinely uncomfortable options, and a room full of people who cannot agree. That is the whole game.

How to Play

One person reads a question aloud. Everyone answers at the same time, either by raising a hand, pointing left or right, or calling out their choice. No passing, no long speeches. After the room splits, anyone who wants thirty seconds to defend their answer gets it, then move on. Six rounds of twelve questions each: start with Round One and let the conversation get thornier as the night goes on. Print the card sheets, cut along the lines, and deal a set to whoever is reading.

Round One: Adult Life Admin

These are the questions that separate people who colour-code their calendar from people who have not opened a letter in six weeks.

  1. Would you rather never have to do your taxes again, or never have to renew any document (passport, licence, insurance) ever again?
  2. Would you rather spend one Saturday a month deep-cleaning the whole house, or spend fifteen minutes every single morning tidying before work?
  3. Would you rather have a PA who handles all your admin but reads every email you send, or handle everything yourself with perfect memory of every task and deadline?
  4. Would you rather always be on hold with customer service for forty-five minutes but always win the dispute, or always get through immediately but lose half the time?
  5. Would you rather file paperwork the day it arrives for the rest of your life, or never file anything but own a magic drawer that produces any document on demand?
  6. Would you rather forget to pay a bill every single month but face no penalty, or remember every bill but always pay five pounds more than you owe?
  7. Would you rather auto-reply to every email you do not answer within an hour, or never send an email and only communicate by phone calls?
  8. Would you rather have your inbox permanently at zero but lose every email after thirty days, or keep every email ever but live with 47,000 unread?
  9. Would you rather spend one full day a year doing every appointment (dentist, GP, optician, accountant) back to back, or spread them out but never be able to cancel or reschedule?
  10. Would you rather cook every meal at home for a year with zero food waste, or eat out every meal for a year but never choose the restaurant?
  11. Would you rather own a car that never breaks down but is the ugliest model on the road, or drive the exact car you want but spend two weeks a year dealing with repairs?
  12. Would you rather always be ten minutes early to everything for the rest of your life, or always be exactly eight minutes late with a perfect excuse ready?

Round Two: Work and Colleagues

Nobody here is talking about their actual employer, obviously, but everyone is thinking about it.

  1. Would you rather work for a brilliant boss who takes all the credit, or a mediocre boss who gives you full credit for everything?
  2. Would you rather have a job you love that pays ten percent below market rate, or a job you find dull that pays thirty percent above it?
  3. Would you rather be the most competent person in every meeting but never be promoted, or get promoted steadily but always feel slightly out of your depth?
  4. Would you rather work from home forever with no dedicated office space, or commute ninety minutes each way to a beautiful private office?
  5. Would you rather have a colleague who talks loudly on personal calls all day, or one who sends forty-word passive-aggressive emails about the dishwasher?
  6. Would you rather give a speech to three hundred strangers or have a difficult performance review conversation with someone you genuinely like?
  7. Would you rather know exactly what every colleague earns, or have everyone know exactly what you earn?
  8. Would you rather work four ten-hour days with a three-day weekend, or work five six-hour days with no flexibility on start and end time?
  9. Would you rather be cc’d on every email in your company, or be removed from all group emails and only receive messages addressed directly to you?
  10. Would you rather give honest feedback in a 360 review knowing it is not truly anonymous, or give only positive feedback and watch nothing change?
  11. Would you rather change careers entirely at full starting salary, or stay in your current field but never receive another pay rise?
  12. Would you rather work alongside your closest friend, or never work with anyone you know socially?

Round Three: Money

Polite dinner parties pretend this round does not exist, which is exactly why it is the most interesting one.

  1. Would you rather receive a lump sum of fifty thousand pounds today with no strings, or an extra thousand pounds added to your salary every month for the next ten years?
  2. Would you rather know the exact date you will run out of money in retirement, or never know but have a financial adviser who promises you will be fine?
  3. Would you rather always split every bill down to the penny with everyone you know, or always be the person who rounds up and covers the difference?
  4. Would you rather have your mortgage paid off but drive a fifteen-year-old car forever, or drive a car you love but carry the mortgage for an extra decade?
  5. Would you rather be completely debt-free but unable to borrow for any reason ever again, or carry a manageable debt load with access to credit whenever you need it?
  6. Would you rather know what every item in a friend’s home cost, or have every friend know the cost of every item in yours?
  7. Would you rather earn exactly what you need with total job security, or earn three times as much in a role that could disappear at any moment?
  8. Would you rather inherit a property you cannot sell for ten years in a city you would not choose to live in, or inherit nothing but keep your current freedom?
  9. Would you rather always get the lowest price on everything through obsessive research, or pay a small premium everywhere and never spend time comparing?
  10. Would you rather have one year of complete financial freedom to do anything, after which you return to exactly your current salary, or receive a fifteen percent permanent pay rise starting today?
  11. Would you rather give ten percent of every pay cheque to a cause you choose, or give nothing but have the government choose where a twenty percent portion goes?
  12. Would you rather know the exact net worth of everyone you meet, or have everyone you meet know yours?

Round Four: Home and Neighbours

Property, proximity and the peculiar intimacy of sharing a wall with people you did not choose: this round covers all of it.

  1. Would you rather have a large garden that requires twelve hours of maintenance a month, or no outdoor space at all?
  2. Would you rather live next door to a couple who argue loudly, or a couple who play bass-heavy music until midnight every Friday?
  3. Would you rather own a beautiful home that needs a major repair every single year, or a less attractive home that costs you nothing in maintenance?
  4. Would you rather know everything that happened in your home before you owned it, or know nothing?
  5. Would you rather have a neighbour who borrows tools without asking and always returns them, or a neighbour who asks permission every time but occasionally breaks what they borrow?
  6. Would you rather live in the centre of a city with no car and excellent transport, or live rurally with a car and a forty-minute drive to anything useful?
  7. Would you rather have a permanent cleaner who rearranges your belongings each visit, or clean everything yourself but keep it exactly as you like it?
  8. Would you rather attend every street party and neighbourhood meeting for the rest of your life, or never attend one but be considered unfriendly by the people on your road?
  9. Would you rather buy a house that is already exactly as you want it but costs fifteen percent more, or buy a project that needs two years of work but costs fifteen percent less?
  10. Would you rather have a neighbour who lets their children play loudly in the garden on weekend mornings, or a neighbour who runs a very successful home bakery that fills the street with the smell of bread at 5am?
  11. Would you rather always know when a parcel has been taken in by a neighbour, or never have to take in anyone else’s parcels?
  12. Would you rather live in your absolute ideal location in a home half the size you need, or a home that is exactly the right size in a neighbourhood you find uninspiring?

Round Five: Ageing and Time

The round where everyone briefly considers their mortality and then orders another drink.

  1. Would you rather know exactly how long you will live, or never know but live in excellent health until the end?
  2. Would you rather age visibly but feel physically thirty-five forever, or look the same as you do now but feel every year of your actual age in your body?
  3. Would you rather have perfect recall of everything that happened before you turned twenty-five, or a flawless memory of everything from twenty-five onwards?
  4. Would you rather spend your retirement travelling constantly with no fixed home, or live in one place you love and have people come to you?
  5. Would you rather be told one specific regret your future self has about how you spent your time in your forties, or receive one piece of financial advice from your future self?
  6. Would you rather hand over your social media presence entirely to an adult child who posts on your behalf, or delete every account and disappear from it entirely?
  7. Would you rather repeat the best year of your life but know it is a repeat and cannot be changed, or live an entirely new year with no guarantee it will be as good?
  8. Would you rather need glasses for everything in your forties but have perfect vision in your seventies, or have perfect vision now and need glasses for everything after sixty-five?
  9. Would you rather know which of your current friendships will still be active in twenty years, or be surprised by who stays?
  10. Would you rather be completely at peace with your age and never mention it, or always know your biological age down to the month and track every marker?
  11. Would you rather work until seventy doing something you find meaningful, or retire at fifty-five doing nothing in particular?
  12. Would you rather feel time slow down so your forties feel as long as your childhood did, or keep the current pace and get through difficult periods faster?

Round Six: The Round Nobody Answers Quickly

Save these for the end of the night, when everyone has settled in and honesty costs a little more.

  1. Would you rather know that your closest friend has always found you slightly exhausting, or never know but sense it occasionally?
  2. Would you rather have made every decision in your adult life by gut feeling alone, or by a careful rational process that always overruled your instincts?
  3. Would you rather be remembered as kinder than you actually were, or remembered accurately?
  4. Would you rather trade ten years of your remaining life for complete certainty about one major life question you currently carry, or keep the years and keep the question?
  5. Would you rather have taken every risk you talked yourself out of in your twenties, knowing half would have failed badly, or have the life you actually built?
  6. Would you rather know exactly what the people closest to you think of your parenting, your career choices, or your relationship? (Pick one, then answer it.)
  7. Would you rather have been braver about one thing earlier, or more patient about one thing earlier?
  8. Would you rather spend the next five years optimising for happiness or for meaning, knowing the two will not always overlap?
  9. Would you rather know which of your habits your future self will be most grateful you kept, or most relieved you dropped?
  10. Would you rather be completely honest in every relationship for one year, or spend one year letting every small thing go without comment?
  11. Would you rather have a life that looks extraordinary from the outside and feels ordinary from the inside, or one that looks ordinary and feels remarkable?
  12. Would you rather change one decision from your past that you believe was wrong, or change one decision you made that turned out right but for a reason you regret?

How to Keep It Moving and When to Stop

The game stalls when someone turns a thirty-second answer into a ten-minute monologue. Set a soft rule at the start: answer first, explain second, and explanations have a ceiling of about a minute. A visible timer on a phone works better than polite nudging.

Some questions will land and some will not, and that is fine. If a question produces a unanimous answer with nothing to discuss, skip to the next one rather than mining a dead seam. The point is the split, not the question itself.

Stop before anyone wants to. Six full rounds of twelve is a long game, and rounds four through six tend to slow naturally as the conversation deepens. Finishing mid-round five with a good question still ringing in the room is a much better ending than grinding through the last three questions of round six on a tired crowd.

If the night is going well and the group wants to keep playing, a good follow-on is This or That Questions for Quick Fun, which moves faster and resets the energy. For a different format entirely, the full list at 25 Party Games for Adults That Aren’t Boring has options for every size of group and every point in the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players do you need for Would You Rather questions for adults?

The game works with as few as three people and as many as fifteen or so before it gets hard to hear answers across the room. The ideal range is six to ten: enough to guarantee a split on most questions, not so many that the debrief becomes a queue.

Do you need to print the cards to play?

No. One person can read from a phone or a printed sheet and the rest of the table answers. The cards are useful when you want to rotate who reads, or when you want to leave sets on tables at a dinner party so guests can dip in without a host managing the game.

Is this suitable for a work party or office event?

Rounds One, Two and Four work well in a professional setting. Round Six gets personal quickly and is better saved for close friends. Skip any question that could land awkwardly given real workplace dynamics.

What card stock should I use for printing?

Eighty-pound cardstock holds up to handling and takes ink cleanly without bleeding. If you want the cards to last the whole party and beyond, print on standard cardstock and run the sheets through a cold laminator before cutting.

How long does a full game take?

Six rounds of twelve questions at a moderate pace takes around sixty to ninety minutes, depending on how much discussion each question generates. Most groups play two or three rounds and then let the conversation take over naturally.

Can you play with just one or two rounds?

Yes, and it is often the better choice. Each round is self-contained. Picking the two or three rounds that suit the mood of the group works just as well as playing all six in order.
