The this or that questions game is honestly one of my all-time favourite ways to break the ice — it’s fast, it’s funny, and absolutely everyone can play, from the quietest kid in the classroom to the most opinionated uncle at the holiday table. All you do is pick a side, and suddenly you know everything you need to know about a person (coffee or tea says a lot, tbh). Whether you’re loading up for a road trip, warming up a party, or just killing five minutes before class starts, these 120 this or that questions will keep things moving and the laughs coming.

How to Play
The this or that questions game couldn’t be simpler: one person reads a question out loud — say, ‘Mountains or beach?’ — and every player calls out their answer at the same time, or holds up a finger for option one or two. There are no wrong answers, no points, and no elimination; the whole point is to spark conversation and tiny arguments about why oat milk is objectively better than almond milk. You can go around the circle, play rapid-fire where everyone answers simultaneously, or use the printable cards below to deal each player a hand and let them quiz each other. Three or more players is the sweet spot, but honestly two people on a long drive works just as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you play the this or that questions game?
One person reads a question aloud — for example, ‘Mountains or beach?’ — and every player calls out their answer at the same time. There are no points and no wrong answers; the fun is in the split-second choices and the conversations (or heated debates) that follow.
How many players do you need?
Two players is plenty for a road trip, but the game really shines with three to ten people — large enough to get a split vote and a fun debate, small enough that everyone gets heard. For a classroom, you can play as a whole group with hands raised.
Is this or that suitable for kids?
Absolutely — every question in this list is completely clean and all-ages. The Food, Funny, and Everyday sections are especially great for younger players, while the Tricky Choices section sparks slightly deeper thinking that older kids and adults tend to love.
How do I print the card decks?
Download or screenshot the card sheet images, then print on white cardstock (it’s much sturdier than regular paper). Run each sheet through a laminator for durability, cut along the thin lines, and clip each sub-theme deck together with a binder ring so the cards stay organised and ready for next time.
Can I use these questions as a quick icebreaker at work or school?
Yes — that’s exactly what they’re designed for! Pick five to ten questions from the Everyday or Funny sections, read them out before a meeting or at the start of class, and you’ll have the room warmed up in under three minutes. No prep, no supplies needed.
What is the best way to store the printed cards?
A small tin works brilliantly — it’s compact, it looks cute on a shelf, and it keeps all five decks together without the cards getting bent. Alternatively, loop a binder ring through one corner of each deck and hang them on a hook inside a cupboard door.
