3 straight twigs or 3 wooden skewers, each 25 to 30 cm long
White or cream yarn, about 3 m per web
Strong craft glue or a short piece of yarn for binding the centre
Black card scrap for a small spider
2 small googly eyes, 6 to 8 mm
Fine black thread for hanging the spider
Step by Step
Cross the three twigs or skewers at their midpoints to form a six-pointed star shape. An adult should hold them in place and bind tightly with a short length of yarn, wrapping it around all three in an X pattern several times before tying off. Add a drop of craft glue over the binding and leave it to dry for 5 minutes so the frame is rigid.
Tie the end of the white yarn to one of the twig tips and begin weaving across the frame: take the yarn from the first twig tip to the next, wrap once around it, continue to the next tip, wrap once, and so on, working your way inward toward the centre. Pull each pass moderately taut: too tight and the frame bends, too loose and the web sags.
After two or three rounds the web pattern becomes clear. Continue spiraling inward, wrapping once around each spoke as you pass it, until you reach about 4 cm from the centre. Tie off the yarn with a double knot around the nearest spoke.
Cut a small spider body from black card: a circle about 2 cm across. Cut eight thin strips about 1 cm wide and 3 cm long for legs. Glue four legs to each side of the body and bend each one once near the tip. Glue on two small googly eyes. Tie a 10 cm length of fine black thread to the body and tie the other end to the centre binding of the web so the spider hangs in the middle.
