Using the white wax crayon, the child draws a large pumpkin outline filling most of the card, then adds a jack-o-lantern face inside it: triangle eyes, a zigzag mouth, and a small stalk at the top. Press firmly with the crayon for a thick waxy line. The drawing will be almost invisible on the white card, which is the point.
Mix orange watercolour or thinned poster paint to a medium strength, not too watery or the resist will look grey. Load the brush and sweep broad strokes of paint across the whole card in one direction, going over the crayon drawing without hesitating. Watch the face appear as you paint.
Let the paint dry for ten minutes. The wax lines stay crisp and white while the painted areas settle to a warm translucent orange.
Once dry, the child can add a green wash for the stalk area and a few black watercolour details for the face shadows if they want more depth.
