Torn-Paper Pumpkin Collage

You'll Need

  • White card, A4, 250 gsm, one sheet per child
  • Orange tissue paper, 5 sheets per child
  • Green tissue paper or crinkle paper, 2 sheets per child
  • Black marker, thick tip, for the outline
  • PVA glue thinned with a little water, in a small pot
  • A foam brush or old paintbrush for applying the glue

Step by Step

  • An adult (or older child) draws a large simple pumpkin shape in thick black marker on the white card, filling most of the page. Add a short stalk at the top and three curved lines down the pumpkin body for the segments. Draw a simple triangular jack-o-lantern face in the centre.
  • Tear the orange tissue into rough strips, each about 2 cm wide. Tearing is better than cutting here: the ragged edges create a more interesting texture.
  • Brush thinned PVA glue over one section of the pumpkin at a time. Press orange tissue strips onto the wet glue, overlapping the edges. Work from the outside of the pumpkin inward, stopping at the face shapes so the black outline shows through.
  • Tear small pieces of green tissue for the stalk and add a few curling green strips around the top of the pumpkin for vines.
  • Leave to dry for five minutes. The tissue darkens slightly as it dries and the surface becomes smooth and almost translucent, which is exactly right.
