Step by Step
An adult draws and cuts Halloween shapes from the black card using a craft knife on a cutting mat: a bat in flight, a crescent moon, a pumpkin outline, a star. The cut-out areas should be generously sized, at least 4 cm across, so the tissue paper colours show up clearly when backlit. Leave a solid border of black card around each shape of at least 1.5 cm.
Tear the tissue paper into small rough squares, about 3 cm across. Have each colour in a separate pile: mixing them before gluing leads to muddy colours.
Turn the black card face down on the table. Brush diluted PVA or apply glue stick over the back of one cut-out window. Press tissue paper squares over it, overlapping them and covering the full opening. Use a single colour per shape or layer two colours for a richer effect: orange over yellow gives a warm amber. Repeat for each cut-out shape.
Leave the glue to dry for 5 minutes. Tape the finished panel to a window using clear tape at the corners or removable putty. When backlit, the tissue paper glows through the black card in bright jewel colours.
