Straw-Blown Ink Spider Web

You'll Need

  • 1 sheet white card, A4 or A5, 160 gsm
  • Black Indian ink or very diluted black acrylic paint (consistency of water)
  • A pipette or teaspoon for dropping ink
  • Drinking straws, one per child
  • White gel pen or white paint pen
  • Black card scrap for spider body
  • Googly eyes 6 mm, 2 per spider
  • PVA glue

Step by Step

  • Drop a small pool of ink or very diluted black paint onto the card, about the size of a 2 pence coin, near the centre. Too much ink makes a puddle that spreads uncontrollably; too little produces only a few spindly lines.
  • Hold the straw a few centimetres above the ink pool and blow gently downward and then outward in a sweeping motion. The ink branches in the direction of the airflow, creating thin spidery lines radiating from the centre. Blow from different angles to send branches in multiple directions. Work quickly before the ink dries.
  • Leave the blown web to dry completely, about 20 minutes. While it dries, cut a small spider body circle from black card, about 2 cm across, and eight leg strips each about 1 cm wide and 3 cm long. Assemble and glue as described in the Paper-Plate Spider Web craft above.
  • Once the web is dry, use the white gel pen to dot small circles along the web lines to suggest dewdrops. Glue the finished spider onto the centre of the web. Leave for 5 minutes to set.
