Newspaper Owl

You'll Need

  • 4 sheets of broadsheet newspaper per owl
  • Brown or orange card, A5, one sheet (wings, beak)
  • Yellow card, a small offcut (eyes)
  • Black marker, fine tip
  • Masking tape
  • PVA glue

Step by Step

  • Roll all four sheets of newspaper into a tall tight cylinder, about 25 cm long and 6 cm in diameter. Wrap it with several strips of masking tape to hold the roll firm.
  • Press the top quarter of the roll inward from both sides to create two ear tufts by squeezing the paper and taping the shape in place. The body below should remain cylindrical.
  • Tear the bottom edge of the roll into rough fringe strips about 3 cm long, pulling them outward to make tail feathers.
  • Cut two rounded wing shapes from the brown or orange card, each about 12 cm long. Glue one to each side of the body with PVA, pressing firmly.
  • Cut two large circles from yellow card, about 4 cm diameter. Draw a black pupil on each and glue them to the front of the owl face, side by side.
  • Cut a small diamond from the brown card, fold it in half to make a beak, and glue between the eyes.
