Hold a small bundle of natural material against the end of a twig, extending four centimetres beyond it. Wrap a rubber band firmly around the join three times until the bundle is secure and does not wobble.
Repeat with different materials (pine needles, leaves, grass) to make three or four different brushes.
Dip each brush into paint and press, drag or stamp it onto large paper to see what marks it makes.
