Each child lightly traces around their own hand and wrist on the black card with a pencil. The pencil lines will not show on black card but leave a faint impression to draw over.
Using the white oil pastel or wax crayon, draw the skeleton bones directly on top of the hand outline. Use simple shapes: long rectangles for the finger bones, rounded ovals for the knuckle joints, a wider rectangle for the palm, and a branching structure for the wrist. Press firmly so the pastel sits thick on the card surface.
Dilute the white or silver watercolour paint with plenty of water: it should be almost transparent, like very thin milk. Brush it generously over the entire hand area in one smooth pass. The wax immediately resists the paint and the bone shapes glow through the wash while the dark card around them takes on a subtle silvery sheen. Add a second wash if the effect looks too pale.
Leave to dry flat for 25 minutes. Do not touch the surface while drying or the wash smears. Once dry, the bones look almost luminous against the dark card.
