Ghost Macrame Wall Hanging

You'll Need

  • Natural cotton macrame cord, 3 mm, approximately 10 m
  • Wooden dowel, 25 cm long, 1 cm diameter
  • Scissors (adult use for initial cutting)
  • A comb or stiff brush for fringing
  • Black felt, one small square, for the eyes
  • craft glue

Step by Step

  • An adult cuts 16 lengths of macrame cord, each 60 cm long, and 1 length of 80 cm for the hanging loop. Fold each of the 16 shorter lengths in half and attach them to the dowel using a lark's head knot (fold in half, loop over the dowel, pull both ends through the loop). You now have 32 working cords hanging from the dowel.
  • Work four rows of alternating square knots across all 32 cords to form the ghost's head. Each square knot uses four cords: the two outer cords are the working cords; the two inner are the filler. The knots should sit snugly against each other and the row should feel solid and compact.
  • To shape the wider body, add one extra lark's head knot on each outer edge at the start of rows 5 and 6 (attaching a new doubled cord to the dowel end each time) so the piece widens by 4 cords each side. Work two more rows of square knots across the wider set of cords.
  • From row 9 onward, let the cords drop freely as an unworked fringe, gradually angling the outermost strands inward by gathering and tying small overhand knots at irregular intervals. This creates the soft, wavy hem of the ghost without needing to cut into the shape.
  • Trim the fringe hem into a gentle wave or leave it uneven for a more relaxed look. Comb or brush the fringe ends to separate the fibres. Cut two small ovals from the black felt and glue them to the knotted head section as eyes. Tie the 80 cm loop cord to both ends of the dowel for hanging.
