Ghost Footprint Canvas

You'll Need

  • 1 canvas panel or stretched canvas, 20 x 20 cm, per print
  • Dark grey or dark green acrylic paint for the background, approx. 30 ml
  • White acrylic paint for the footprint, approx. 20 ml
  • Black fine-tip brush or permanent marker for the face
  • A shallow tray or plate for the paint
  • Baby wipes for quick foot cleaning

Step by Step

  • Paint the entire canvas in dark grey or dark green acrylic using a wide brush. One coat is often enough for a good background colour. Leave to dry for 20 minutes.
  • Pour a small amount of white acrylic into the shallow tray. A layer about 2 mm deep is plenty. Press the child's clean, bare foot gently into the white paint, coating the sole evenly. Too much paint makes the print blobby and loses the ghost shape; a light, even coat gives the cleanest result.
  • Press the painted foot firmly onto the canvas, heel up toward the top of the canvas and toes pointing downward. Lift straight off without sliding. Wipe the child's foot immediately with baby wipes. The print will look like a rounded heel sitting above five toe marks: that is your ghost.
  • Leave the footprint to dry for 15 minutes. Once fully dry, add a ghost face in the heel section: two small oval eyes and a tiny mouth, painted or drawn on. The features should sit just below the centre of the heel curve.
  • Once the face is dry, the canvas can be framed as-is, hung with a sawtooth hanger, or propped on a shelf.
