Cupcake-Liner Owl

You'll Need

  • 2 white or brown cupcake liners per owl
  • 1 sheet orange, purple or yellow card, A4, for background
  • 2 buttons, about 15 mm, for eyes (or googly eyes)
  • Small scrap of orange card for beak and feet
  • PVA glue
  • Brown or dark orange watercolour paint and a brush (optional, for tinting the liners)
  • Pencil, child scissors for beak, adult scissors for wings

Step by Step

  • Optional: brush each cupcake liner very lightly with diluted brown watercolour to give it a feathery warmth. Let them dry flat for 10 minutes. Skip this step if the white liner colour works for your owl.
  • Flatten each cupcake liner into a rough disc shape. Place the larger liner near the bottom centre of the background card and the slightly smaller one above it, overlapping by about 2 cm so the top liner becomes the head and the bottom one the body. Glue both down, pressing firmly around the edges so the ruffled rims stay raised and give a feather texture.
  • An adult cuts two small wing shapes from brown or orange card scraps: simple rounded ovals about 5 cm long. Tuck one under each side of the body liner and glue them so they appear to emerge from behind the body.
  • An adult cuts a tiny triangle from orange card for the beak, about 1.5 cm wide and 1 cm tall. Glue it at the centre join between the two liners, pointing downward. Glue the two button eyes or googly eyes above the beak on the upper liner, close together.
  • An adult cuts two simple feet from orange card: a strip with three short snips at the bottom to make toes. Tuck and glue the feet under the bottom edge of the body liner. Leave everything to dry for 5 minutes.
