50 cm of charcoal cotton canvas (at least 130 cm wide), or equivalent in pieces
Pinking shears
2 m natural twine
A hand sewing needle and thread in a matching dark colour
A ruler and chalk or fabric pencil for marking
Step by Step
Mark out equilateral triangles on the canvas using the ruler and chalk: each triangle should be approximately 20 cm wide at the base and 25 cm tall. Cut each one out with the pinking shears, which gives a zigzag edge that will not fray. For a 2 m length of bunting, cut ten to twelve triangles. Lay them out in a row, points facing down, to check they are consistent in size before moving on.
Fold the top 2 cm of each triangle over the twine, enclosing the twine inside the fold so it runs along the top edge of the triangle. The triangle should hang from the twine rather than being knotted to it. Pin the fold in place with a dressmaking pin.
Stitch the fold closed with a running stitch, sewing through both layers of canvas with the twine inside. Keep the stitches close together (about 4 mm apart) and in a straight line along the fold. Space the triangles evenly along the twine as you go, leaving 10 cm between each one. Leave at least 20 cm of bare twine at each end for tying.
