Bubble-Print Cauldron Collage

You'll Need

  • 1 sheet yellow card, A3, 160 gsm
  • 1 sheet black card, A4, 160 gsm
  • 4 to 6 toilet-roll tubes
  • Tempera or washable paint in orange, green, purple, red, blue, pink
  • Small paint trays or jar lids for dipping
  • 12 to 15 assorted pom-poms, 2 to 4 cm
  • 10 to 12 googly eyes, assorted sizes 10 to 20 mm
  • PVA glue
  • Pencil and child scissors (adult cuts cauldron)

Step by Step

  • An adult draws and cuts a cauldron shape from the black A4 card: a wide belly, a narrower neck and two small handles on the sides. The cauldron should fill about the lower third of the yellow sheet. Glue it in place and let it sit for five minutes.
  • Pour a thin puddle of each paint colour into its own lid or tray. Dip the end of a toilet-roll tube into one colour so the rim is lightly coated, then press it firmly onto the yellow card above the cauldron opening. Lift straight up. You should see a clean ring with a hollow centre.
  • Keep printing rings in overlapping clusters, switching colours freely and letting them overlap. Cover roughly the top two-thirds of the yellow sheet. The rings do not need to be tidy; a slightly wobbly or partial ring looks like a proper bubble. Let everything dry completely, about 30 minutes.
  • Once the paint is dry, squeeze small dots of PVA glue onto the collage and press pom-poms and googly eyes into the gaps between rings. A googly eye inside a ring reads as a monster bubble, which children find enormously satisfying. Leave the glue to set for 10 minutes before moving.
