1 clean glass jar, about 400 ml (a standard jam jar works perfectly)
Orange tissue paper, 3 to 4 sheets
PVA glue diluted 1:1 with water
Black card, A4, 160 gsm
Pencil, craft knife and cutting mat (adult only)
1 battery-operated LED tea light
Foam brush or wide flat brush
Step by Step
Tear the tissue paper into rough squares about 5 cm across. Brush the outside of the jar with the diluted PVA and apply tissue paper squares one at a time, overlapping them and smoothing out bubbles with the brush. Cover the sides completely in two or three overlapping layers but leave the base uncovered so the jar sits flat. Brush a final coat of diluted PVA over the top to seal. Leave to dry for at least 15 minutes: the jar should feel smooth and firm, not sticky.
While the jar dries, an adult draws a silhouette design on the black card: a row of bats, a line of bare trees, a witch on a broomstick, or a row of cats. The design should be about 4 cm tall and long enough to wrap around the top of the jar with a 1 cm overlap. An adult cuts this out with a craft knife on a cutting mat.
Once the jar is dry, wrap the black silhouette strip around the top of the jar and glue the overlap in place. It should sit like a collar just below the rim. Drop the LED tea light inside the jar and switch it on. The orange glow through the tissue paper and the black silhouette shadow make this look genuinely atmospheric.
