Open the bag and stand it upright on a flat surface. Apply the first strip of washi tape from the top fold to the bottom of the bag in one continuous vertical strip, pressing as you go. Start the tape flush with the top edge.
Apply a second strip of a different washi pattern parallel to the first, leaving roughly 1 cm of kraft showing between them. Add a third and fourth strip in the same way, alternating patterns. Four strips across a standard lunch bag fill about half the front panel.
If any tape overhangs the bag base, fold it neatly onto the base panel and press flat. The base is rarely visible when the bag is standing, so a slightly untidy fold there does not matter.
Stamp or press a sticker label in the blank kraft space below or between the tape strips, or write the recipient's name in black marker.
Fill the bag, then fold the top down twice and tie a length of baker's twine or ribbon around the fold to keep it closed.
