The child tears the black paper into rough pieces. No guiding needed: the irregular edges are exactly what makes this look like bat wings. Aim for pieces at least 5 centimetres across so they are easy to grip and glue.
Swipe the glue stick generously over one piece at a time and press it onto the white sheet. Build up the shape from the centre outward: a cluster of pieces in the middle for the body, pieces splaying out to each side for wings. Press each piece down firmly for a few seconds.
Once the whole bat shape is down, press the sheet flat under a heavy book for a few minutes. The finished piece is dry almost immediately. Store flat in a folder or roll loosely and secure with a rubber band.
