Sponge Print Pumpkin

You'll Need

  • 1 large kitchen sponge (the bigger the better for toddler grip)
  • Orange washable paint
  • 1 sheet of white or cream paper, at least A4
  • A small plate or tray for the paint
  • A green marker or green paint for a stem (optional)

Step by Step

  • An adult cuts the sponge into a rounded pumpkin shape with scissors before the session: a fat oval with two small notches at the top centre to suggest the ridges. Dampen the sponge lightly and wring it out.
  • Pour a shallow layer of orange paint onto the plate. The child presses the sponge flat into the paint, then presses it firmly onto the paper and holds it for two seconds before lifting. The shape should be solid orange with a little texture from the sponge surface.
  • Set the paper flat to dry, about 15 minutes. Once dry, a child can add a quick stem in green marker or with a dab of green paint on a finger.
