Scarecrow Brown Bag Puppet

You'll Need

  • 1 small kraft lunch bag per scarecrow
  • Orange, yellow and brown poster or acrylic paint
  • Black card, A4, 200 gsm, for the hat
  • Natural raffia or torn strips of brown paper, about 10 cm long, 6 strips per puppet
  • Red marker or red paint for a stitched smile
  • Black marker, medium tip
  • craft glue
  • Scissors (adult for hat cutting)

Step by Step

  • Paint the bag face area in a warm yellow-orange: this is the scarecrow's cloth head. You do not need to paint the whole bag, just the front from the base flap halfway down. Let dry for fifteen minutes.
  • Once dry, draw the scarecrow's face with the black marker: two large X-shaped eyes, a simple triangle nose and a stitched-line mouth. The mouth is a straight line with short perpendicular stitches crossing it at intervals, drawn in red marker or red paint.
  • Cut a pointed witch-style hat from black card: a tall triangle on top of a wide brim rectangle. An adult cuts this. Glue the hat to the top of the bag base, tilted very slightly to one side for character.
  • Glue bundles of raffia or torn paper strips to the sides of the bag just below the bag opening to suggest straw stuffing at the collar. Two or three strips per side is enough. Press firmly and let dry for ten minutes.
  • Paint a small patch shape in brown or orange on the bag front, just below the face, and draw a few stitch lines around its edge with the black marker. One patch is enough.
  • Operate the scarecrow puppet in the same hand position as any bag puppet: four fingers in the upper flap, thumb in the lower pocket.
