French Onion Dip

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour 35 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 45 minutes
Makes 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • black pepper
  • chives chopped, for topping
  • kettle chips for serving

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and salt and cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 35 minutes, until deep golden brown and jammy.
  • Lower the heat if the onions start browning faster than they soften.
  • Remove from heat and let the onions cool completely, about 15 minutes, then chop finely.
  • Stir the cooled onions into the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder and black pepper.
  • Cover and chill for at least 1 hour, which lets the dip firm up and the flavors settle.
  • Top with chopped chives and serve cold with kettle chips.

Good to Know

Caramelize the onions up to three days ahead and keep them in the fridge, the dip itself still needs its hour of chilling after mixing.
