72 Weird Would You Rather Questions for People Who Like Strange

Weird would you rather questions work because the truly odd pairs are harder to answer than the gross ones, and the debate lasts three times as long. This list runs six escalating rounds, starting gently strange and ending somewhere most game nights never go. Adults who have played the standard version a hundred times will find something here that actually makes them pause.

How to Play

Read a question aloud and give everyone five seconds to lock in a silent answer, then reveal on three. Anyone whose choice matches nobody else in the room earns a point. Play all twelve questions in a round before moving to the next, or deal the printed cards face-down and let each player draw and read one. No wrong answers, no skipping, and if a question sends the table into a ten-minute argument, that is the game working exactly as intended.

Round One: Mildly Odd

These twelve pairs ease the room in: strange enough to spark debate, calm enough that nobody sets down their drink. Start here and watch people realise this version of would you rather is going to be different.

  1. Would you rather always walk exactly one step behind your own shadow, or always one step ahead of it?
  2. Would you rather every door you open plays a random five-second jingle, or every chair you sit in gives a polite round of applause?
  3. Would you rather your name be slightly mispronounced by everyone you meet for the rest of your life, or your name be spelled wrong on every official document forever?
  4. Would you rather have a twin you have never met who shares your face but hates all your hobbies, or no twin but everyone you meet insists they know someone who looks exactly like you?
  5. Would you rather smell popcorn everywhere you go but never find the source, or hear faint hold music whenever a room goes quiet?
  6. Would you rather your laugh sounds exactly like a dial-up modem, or your sneeze sounds exactly like a car alarm?
  7. Would you rather every photo taken of you comes out slightly blurry no matter the camera, or you are always perfectly in focus but your eyes are closed?
  8. Would you rather your handwriting slowly drift toward a different language’s alphabet over ten years, or your signature change by one random letter every six months?
  9. Would you rather get one unsolicited fortune cookie fortune delivered to your pocket every morning, or receive one anonymous book recommendation slipped under your door each week?
  10. Would you rather all your clocks run four minutes fast and you cannot change them, or all your clocks run four minutes slow and you cannot change them?
  11. Would you rather every plant you own grows exactly three centimetres taller per day regardless of species, or every plant you own slowly migrates one centimetre toward the window per week?
  12. Would you rather your reflection always waves two seconds after you do, or your reflection always blinks two seconds before you do?

Round Two: Strange Bodies and Senses

The body gets weird in round two. These twelve questions are about perception and sensation, none of them gross, all of them genuinely hard to decide.

  1. Would you rather be able to taste sounds but only on Tuesdays, or hear colours but only when it rains?
  2. Would you rather your sense of smell work in reverse, so bad smells seem pleasant and good smells seem unpleasant, or your sense of taste be permanently shifted exactly two flavour categories along (so sweet becomes salty, salty becomes sour, and so on)?
  3. Would you rather your hair grow exactly one centimetre per day everywhere on your head, or your fingernails grow exactly one centimetre per week on your dominant hand only?
  4. Would you rather feel a slight cool breeze on the back of your neck whenever someone nearby is lying, or feel a gentle tap on your shoulder whenever someone nearby is stressed?
  5. Would you rather your heartbeat become audible to you at a comfortable hum during silence, or your breathing become faintly visible as a light mist in all temperatures?
  6. Would you rather your eyes glow very faintly amber in the dark, not enough to light anything but enough to notice, or your skin emit a barely perceptible warmth that people near you can feel but not explain?
  7. Would you rather your sense of direction be perfect in every unfamiliar city but completely unreliable in your home town, or your memory for faces be flawless for strangers but blank for anyone you have known more than a year?
  8. Would you rather your voice echo once, softly, about a second after you speak, or your footsteps make a sound one full beat after your foot hits the ground?
  9. Would you rather you feel no temperature difference between hot and cold food but still taste everything perfectly, or you feel temperature perfectly but every meal tastes faintly of black pepper regardless of preparation?
  10. Would you rather your yawns be completely silent but physically twice as long as normal, or your yawns be at normal length but produce a single low musical note?
  11. Would you rather blink half as often as you currently do, consciously, or blink twice as often without noticing you are doing it?
  12. Would you rather your peripheral vision extend an extra forty degrees but be black and white, or your central vision sharpen to twice its current acuity but require three seconds to focus when you shift your gaze?

Round Three: Impossible Physics

Round three ignores the laws of the universe on purpose. The pairs here reward anyone who thinks for thirty seconds before answering, and the follow-up debates tend to outlast the round. If your group overlaps with the this or that questions crowd, this round is where they will feel at home.

  1. Would you rather gravity work sideways for you alone, so you fall toward the nearest wall instead of the floor, or gravity work normally except you are ten percent lighter than everything else and drift slightly with each step?
  2. Would you rather your shadow behave as if cast by a light source three hours in the future, or your shadow behave as if cast by a light source from a completely different location that you cannot identify?
  3. Would you rather sound travel to you in a five-second delay as though you are always slightly out of sync with the world, or light reach your eyes in a half-second delay so the world is always fractionally in your past?
  4. Would you rather all objects you touch become exactly room temperature instantly, regardless of what they were before, or all objects you set down return to the exact position you last placed them if nobody moves them within an hour?
  5. Would you rather fire not burn you but also not produce heat you can feel, or water not make you wet but also feel like touching dry fabric when you swim in it?
  6. Would you rather your footprints glow for exactly sixty seconds after you make them, or your breath leave a visible trail in the air for ten seconds regardless of temperature?
  7. Would you rather fall upward for three seconds before gravity reverses back to normal every time you jump, or fall at half speed always but hit the ground with normal impact?
  8. Would you rather all liquids you pour flow toward you instead of away, stopping at the edge of whatever you are pouring into, or all solids you hold become very slightly translucent, never invisible, just slightly see-through?
  9. Would you rather your voice carry exactly twice as far outdoors but cut to half its range indoors, or your voice carry exactly the same distance regardless of how loudly or quietly you speak?
  10. Would you rather clocks in every room you enter run at double speed while you are present but return to normal when you leave, or mirrors show your reflection from forty-five seconds earlier, always, everywhere?
  11. Would you rather your hair never move in wind regardless of how strong it is, or your clothes never wrinkle regardless of how long you have been wearing them?
  12. Would you rather your written words fade from paper after twenty-four hours unless you trace them again, or your typed text appear on screen two words ahead of where you are currently typing?

Round Four: Unsettling but Not Grim

Unsettling is not the same as dark. These twelve pairs create that specific low-grade unease that makes people laugh partly out of relief. No harm, no horror, just the persistent feeling that something is slightly wrong.

  1. Would you rather every stranger you pass on the street say your name quietly under their breath, or every stranger you pass make brief, direct eye contact and give one slow nod?
  2. Would you rather all the furniture in your home shift two centimetres overnight every third night and never shift back, or one item in your home be in a slightly different position each morning but you can never catch it moving?
  3. Would you rather receive a handwritten letter each month from an anonymous sender who accurately describes a mundane thing you did three weeks ago, or receive a phone call once a month from an unknown number that plays thirty seconds of ambient noise from a place you cannot identify?
  4. Would you rather birds always land nearby and face you but never approach closer than two metres, or cats in any neighbourhood you visit sit in windows and watch you leave until you are out of sight?
  5. Would you rather your name appear in the credits of films you have definitely never been involved with, or your face appear in the background of photos in strangers’ albums from years before you were born?
  6. Would you rather every house plant you own turns to face you while you sleep, resetting by morning, or every book you own rearranges itself alphabetically overnight without being touched?
  7. Would you rather you always feel watched when you are completely alone but never feel watched when you genuinely are being observed, or you always feel slightly followed but can never confirm it and nothing ever happens?
  8. Would you rather all your shoes be returned to the same spot by morning regardless of where you left them, or all your keys be moved exactly one room closer to the front door overnight?
  9. Would you rather hear your own name said in a crowd where nobody present admits to saying it, once per week, or hear a song you have never heard before running clearly through your head for ten minutes every few days, then forget it completely?
  10. Would you rather your dreams always star people you have never met and you recognise none of them, or your dreams replay actual events from your day in accurate detail but with one minor, inexplicable change you cannot identify?
  11. Would you rather every mirror you own shows a room that is very similar to your home but with one item missing that you can never identify, or every window in your home occasionally reflects a view of a street you do not recognise?
  12. Would you rather numbers that matter to you, door numbers, prices, timestamps, always seem to rearrange to the same sequence, or words in the last line of every book you finish rearrange to form one short sentence that is different each time?

Round Five: Genuinely Strange

By round five the room should be loosened up enough to sit with a properly strange question. These twelve have no obvious right answer and no comfortable way to reason through them quickly. For a warm-up at birthday party games for adults, drop round five in as a standalone round to reset the energy mid-evening.

  1. Would you rather know the exact population of every room you enter, including rooms you cannot see into, or know the exact age of every building you stand inside?
  2. Would you rather your future self sends you one piece of advice per year on your birthday but you cannot confirm whether it is genuine, or your past self sends you one question per year that you must answer honestly but send nowhere?
  3. Would you rather be the only person who ages normally while everyone around you ages two years for every one of yours, or age at half the rate of everyone around you while they progress normally?
  4. Would you rather remember every dream you have ever had in perfect detail but be unable to describe them to anyone coherently, or forget every dream within seconds of waking but feel a clear emotional residue from each one for the rest of the day?
  5. Would you rather understand every language spoken to you but speak only your native language in response, or speak every language fluently but understand only your native language when others speak?
  6. Would you rather every decision you make is the correct one for a stranger somewhere you will never meet, or every decision you make is the wrong one for a version of yourself in a parallel situation you will never see?
  7. Would you rather be able to sense exactly how long you have been in any given room, accurate to the second, or sense exactly how long any object in a room has been sitting in its current position?
  8. Would you rather your name change slightly in everyone’s memory every decade, so people who knew you at twenty remember you by a name three letters different, or your appearance shift by one small feature, a freckle, an eyebrow angle, in everyone’s memory every five years?
  9. Would you rather know which of your beliefs will change most significantly in the next ten years but not which direction they will change, or know which relationship in your life will look most different in ten years but not how?
  10. Would you rather be the only person in the world who finds a specific colour beautiful, a colour everyone else finds dull, or be the only person who finds a specific sound pleasant, a sound everyone else finds neutral or irritating?
  11. Would you rather exist five seconds ahead of the present moment, experiencing things slightly before they happen and unable to act on it, or exist five seconds behind, always processing what just occurred and never quite in the now?
  12. Would you rather your internal monologue narrate in a different person’s voice each day, chosen at random from voices you have heard, or your internal monologue switch to a different language each week, one you may or may not speak?

Round Six: The Weirdest Round

Round six does not escalate gradually. It arrives. These twelve pairs are the ones people screenshot and send the next morning, and nobody agrees on any of them.

  1. Would you rather every number you write turns into its word form automatically, so you can never write the numeral 7, only "seven" or every word you write that is also a colour turns the ink that colour regardless of your pen?
  2. Would you rather your biography is being written in real time by a biographer you cannot contact, who finds your daily life genuinely fascinating for reasons you will never understand, or a documentary about your routine is being filmed by a crew you cannot see and you will never watch the result?
  3. Would you rather the last song you listened to becomes the ambient soundtrack of every public space you enter for the rest of the day, audible only to you, or the last meal you ate becomes faintly detectable as a scent to everyone near you for the next four hours?
  4. Would you rather your name appear on a plaque on a park bench in a city you have never visited and people assume you are deceased, or your photo appear in a textbook for a subject that does not exist as an example of something the caption never fully explains?
  5. Would you rather every lift you take stops at one extra floor that is not in the building directory, the doors open on an empty hallway, and then it continues normally, or every staircase you climb has one more step than you counted before you started?
  6. Would you rather you are completely fluent in a language nobody has ever heard before but cannot teach it to anyone because it vanishes from their memory within minutes, or you can write music perfectly but every piece you write sounds exactly like a song that already exists that you have never heard?
  7. Would you rather find a detailed map of a building you have never been to that you recognise completely, or find a photograph of a place you have never visited in which everything looks exactly as you would have arranged it?
  8. Would you rather a version of today’s newspaper arrives each morning dated exactly one hundred years from now, accurate and detailed but written for an audience that assumes you already know certain things you cannot figure out, or a handwritten personal diary arrives each morning from one hundred years ago, belonging to someone whose situation rhymes with yours in ways that are sometimes too specific to be coincidental?
  9. Would you rather every object you lose is replaced by an identical object that has clearly been used by someone else, or every object you buy arrives already slightly worn, as though someone owned it happily for a year before you?
  10. Would you rather your handwriting be recognised by people who have never seen it before as something they have definitely read, or your voice be described by people who have never heard it as one they have been hearing in passing for years?
  11. Would you rather be the person who decides which year a particular common object, the kind everyone owns, is redesigned, with no other creative input, or be the person who decides which one word is added to a major dictionary each year, with no power over its definition?
  12. Would you rather wake up one morning knowing, with complete certainty, that you have already lived this exact day but remember none of it, or fall asleep one night knowing, with complete certainty, that tomorrow will be a day you have not lived yet but have somehow already forgotten?

How to Keep It Moving and When to Stop

Set a timer. Two minutes per question is generous. If a debate is still running hot at ninety seconds, give it thirty more and then call the vote and move on. The game earns its reputation from the accumulation of strange pairs, not from one question that becomes a philosophy seminar.

Watch for the energy shift between rounds. Most groups hit their sweet spot somewhere in rounds three and four, where the questions are hard enough to matter but not so abstract that people check out. If the room is tiring, stop at the end of whichever round you are on rather than pushing to the finish. Leaving round six unplayed means there is still somewhere new to go next time.

Print the cards on cardstock, trim along the cut lines, and store each round in a small box or on a binder ring so the sets stay separate. That way you can start a different night on round two or four without reshuffling everything. And if anyone at the table is the type who needs a gentler warm-up, party games for adults has plenty of lower-stakes options to open the evening before the strange stuff begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players do you need for weird would you rather questions?

Three players is a workable minimum, but the game gets dramatically better with five or more. You need enough people for the room to split on at least a few answers, which is what creates the debate.

Do you need any supplies to play?

Nothing required. Read the questions from a phone or laptop and play in any order. Print and cut the card decks if you want a more tactile version, or use them as conversation-starter cards on a table.

How do you print the card decks?

Print each sheet at A4 or Letter size on cardstock, then trim along the cut lines. Laminating pouches keep the cards durable if you plan to reuse them. A binder ring through one corner keeps each round bundled separately.

Are these weird would you rather questions suitable for teenagers?

Rounds One through Three are fine for most teenagers. Rounds Four through Six are written for adults and may require a parent to preview them first, though none contain adult language, violence or mature themes.

Can you mix rounds, or do they need to go in order?

Mix freely. The escalating order is a suggestion for groups starting cold. Experienced players can shuffle all six round decks together and draw at random.

What is the best round to start with at a party where people do not know each other well?

Start with Round One: Mildly Odd. The questions are strange enough to be interesting but low-stakes enough that nobody feels put on the spot before the room has warmed up.
